Welcome!
For our students, Week 4 ended at lunchtime on Thursday, giving families a long weekend to enjoy. Friday saw the school closed as the country and much of the world recognised Labour Day on 1st May. This day of rest commemorates the efforts of workers’ unions in the 19th century, who fought for workers’ rights, uniting people across the world to stand against unfair exploitation, such as child labour and unsafe working conditions.
Collective action remains a powerful tool for people to address societal issues and when it is used positively can bring benefit to many. And so it is at Sekolah Nusa Alam that we focus on our shared values and goals, supporting each other so that everyone has the opportunity to grow and thrive regardless of differences. This was embodied in our celebration on Kartini Day as our community recognised the powerful achievements of Ibu Raden Ajeng Kartini in uniting people to fight for the right to education for girls and improve the political and social rights of Indonesian women.
A noble, necessary struggle.
Kartini Day
Our school recently came together to celebrate Kartini Day with a vibrant and heartfelt assembly that honoured the spirit of Indonesian women and girls. The programme was filled with colour, music, and movement – from traditional songs to a delightful performance by our Early Years 3 students, who sang and danced with joy and confidence. Our secondary girls presented a graceful traditional dance in beautiful dress. We listened to moving poetry readings and cheered during a lively quiz that engaged the whole audience. Even our teachers joined in, performing an elegant dance to the delight of the students.
The assembly concluded with a particularly meaningful moment, as the girls and women of SNA walked across the field between lines of boys and men, who showered them with colourful flower petals. It was a simple yet powerful gesture of respect and appreciation.
This celebration was more than a performance – it was a reflection of our shared values as a school community. By honouring Ibu Raden Ajeng Kartini and all Indonesian women and girls, we reaffirm our commitment to respect, equality, and the recognition of the essential role women play in shaping society.
Competition
Last week, several of our students took part in the local selection for the Olimpiade Olahraga Siswa Nasional O2SN (the National Olympiad of sports for students). Casha (Y3) tried out in the swimming while Jaya (Y5) and Zara (Y5) tried out in athletics.
Although they did not progress this time, we are proud of them for taking part and giving their best. We will continue to compete in this and other sports competitions and will work hard to build the sports stamina and skills in our students so they can achieve greater success in years to come.
Exam Season
Our IGCSE examinations are now well underway for our Year 10 students. This year SNA has seen a notable increase in the number of exams being sat. This growth reflects not only the expansion of our Upper Secondary programme, but also our continued commitment to delivering internationally recognised academic standards.
We are also pleased to be hosting a number of external students, who are sitting their examinations at our centre. This is a mark of trust in the quality and reliability of our processes, and something we take seriously.
All examinations are conducted in strict accordance with Cambridge regulations, with careful attention to procedure, timing, and integrity. Under the supervision of Pak Jason, our exam facilities and execution meet the rigorous standards required, ensuring a calm, fair, and well-managed environment for all candidates.
We are pleased to introduce Ibu Adel and Pak Awad as the newest members of our teaching staff. Between them, they will lead our Music and Drama programs, bringing both experience and enthusiasm to their roles.
They will guide students in developing subject knowledge, as well as the practical skills and techniques needed for confident and successful performance. We look forward to the energy and creativity they will bring to the performing arts, and to seeing our students grow in expression, confidence, and collaboration under their guidance.
Our recent professional development sessions provided valuable time for staff to come together, reflect, and strengthen their practice. Teachers explored new strategies to add to their professional toolkit, sharing ideas and approaches that will continue to enhance teaching and learning across the school. Alongside this, we worked collaboratively on refining school policies and further developing our events and academic calendar.
SNA is a dynamic environment, with many moving parts across different sections of the school. In such a setting, alignment is essential. These sessions allow us to ensure that our approaches are consistent, purposeful, and clearly connected to our shared vision. By working together in this way, we build a strong and coherent school culture – one in which the Cambridge learner attributes are not just statements on a page, but are actively lived and reinforced in classrooms, activities, and relationships across the campus.
