Dear Parents/Caregivers,
There is always something special about the first week of a new school year. The campus once again fills with conversation, laughter, and that unmistakable sense of anticipation as students reconnect with old friends, meet new classmates and teachers, and begin the next chapter of their learning journey.
Throughout the week, students settled into their homerooms, learned about the routines and expectations that will guide the year ahead, and began building the relationships that make a school community thrive. In Secondary, students also took ownership of their homerooms by designing and decorating them around themes of their own choosing, transforming each classroom into a space that reflects their creativity and collective identity. Outside these classrooms, the entire 4th floor has had a makeover, bringing a fresh feel and sense of purpose. Exciting times!
As students returned, they were greeted by a number of developments across the campus. Our library has been beautifully remodelled through the vision and hard work of Ibu Cindy and Pak Neal, creating a bright and welcoming space that invites students to read, explore, and discover. There is also now a dedicated school counsellor’s office and a new supplies room to better support the day-to-day life of the school.
Outdoors, our garden has been extended and will soon become home to a hydroponics system, providing authentic opportunities for students to carry out practical science investigations. Our science department, now led by Ibu Lia, are planning to develop this even further with the addition of an aquaponics system sometime this year. In Early Years, the classrooms have been thoughtfully redesigned to more closely reflect our play-based approach to learning, while our youngest students (and quite a few older ones!) are already enjoying the new play area in the school lobby. Even simple improvements, such as the installation of additional fans in the cafeteria, contribute to creating a more comfortable environment for everyone.
The week concluded with our Open House, where parents were warmly welcomed into classrooms to meet teachers, explore the learning spaces, and begin the important partnership between home and school that supports every child’s education. It was wonderful to see so many families on campus, sharing in the excitement of a new beginning.
Each of these improvements reflects something much larger than new facilities or refreshed spaces. They represent our ongoing commitment to progress – continually refining our school environment so that it supports curiosity, creativity, wellbeing, and meaningful learning. As we begin another year together, we look forward to seeing these spaces come alive through the daily experiences of our students and the memories they will create within them.
At yesterday’s Open House, I had the pleasure of sharing our school theme for the year: Explore. Discover. Inspire. While these are three simple words, together they express something fundamental about the kind of education we strive to provide at Sekolah Nusa Alam. They also sit naturally alongside our Cambridge learner attributes, providing a shared direction for our students, teachers, and wider community throughout the year ahead.
Exploration is about far more than visiting new places. It begins with curiosity – the confidence to ask questions, investigate ideas, embrace challenges, and learn from mistakes along the way. We want our students to become active participants in their own learning rather than passive receivers of information. Whether they are conducting a science investigation, creating a work of art, solving a mathematical problem, performing on stage, or learning outdoors, we want them to experience the excitement that comes from wondering, experimenting, collaborating, and trying again. In doing so, they grow as confident learners who are willing to take risks, innovative thinkers who seek new solutions, and engaged members of their learning community.
Through exploration comes discovery. One of the greatest privileges of teaching is watching children discover abilities they never knew they possessed. They discover a love of reading, music, science, or sport. They discover resilience after overcoming a difficult challenge. They discover the value of teamwork and the satisfaction that comes from perseverance. Most importantly, they begin to discover who they are becoming. Our role as educators is not simply to provide answers, but to create the conditions in which these discoveries can take place. Along the way, students become increasingly reflective, learning from both success and failure, while developing into responsible young people who understand that their choices shape both their own futures and the lives of those around them.
Ultimately, we hope that discovery leads to inspiration. Not the kind that seeks applause or recognition, but the quieter kind that is seen in character and everyday actions. We want our students to lead with integrity, show kindness without expecting anything in return, encourage those around them, and use their knowledge and talents to make a positive contribution to their communities.
Inspiration, however, does not simply mark the end of the journey. It becomes the beginning of the next one. A student who discovers a love of science is inspired to investigate further. A student who overcomes a challenge finds the confidence to attempt an even greater one. A successful performance encourages another. A thoughtful question leads to deeper inquiry. In this way, exploration leads to discovery, discovery leads to inspiration, and inspiration gives students the confidence and curiosity to explore once again. It is a cycle of learning that continues throughout life.
Throughout the year, Explore. Discover. Inspire. will serve as more than just a theme. It will be a reminder that education is a journey of curiosity, growth, and purpose. When our students explore with confidence, discover with reflection, innovate with imagination, act responsibly, and remain fully engaged in the world around them, they are not only living our theme, they are becoming the Cambridge learners we hope they will be.
On Wednesday, our campus was buzzing with excitement as students explored the wide range of opportunities on offer at this semester’s Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) bazaar. Teachers and external coaches introduced the many clubs, sports, and specialist programmes available, giving students the chance to learn more about each activity before making their choices.
Our ECA programme is an important extension of classroom learning. It provides opportunities for students to discover new interests, develop existing talents, and build confidence through experiences that encourage creativity, teamwork, resilience, and leadership. Whether learning a new skill, representing the school in sport, or pursuing a creative passion, ECAs help bring our school theme – Explore. Discover. Inspire. – to life.
Each activity will run throughout the semester, allowing students time to develop meaningful skills and form lasting friendships. In January, we will hold a second ECA Bazaar, giving students the opportunity either to continue building on the progress they have made or to explore something entirely new. We look forward to another semester of students embracing new challenges, discovering hidden talents, and making the most of the many opportunities our vibrant ECA programme has to offer.
As communicated to parents over the past week, we have introduced a number of updates to our school policies as part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe, respectful, and well-managed learning environment for every student. These policies will be published in the updated school handbook next week.
Our Attendance Policy has been revised to provide greater clarity for families regarding attendance expectations and procedures. While our Uniform Policy has not changed, it will now be applied more consistently, with clear consequences for repeated breaches. These expectations help foster a sense of pride, responsibility, and belonging within our school community.
We have also introduced a new Public Displays of Affection (PDA) Policy, designed to support respectful and age-appropriate interactions between students. In addition, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our Safeguarding Policy, strengthening both the policy itself and the internal procedures that support it. These changes reflect our commitment to international best practice and ensure that the safety and wellbeing of every child remains at the centre of all we do.
Schools are living communities that continue to grow and evolve. Reviewing our policies regularly allows us to respond thoughtfully to changing needs while maintaining the high standards that our students, parents, and staff both expect and deserve.
Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting with teachers and school leaders, Ibu Asti and Bapak Hadi, from SMK Nurul Islam to begin planning a number of shared initiatives that will strengthen the partnership between our two schools. From beach clean-up projects and reciprocal school visits to collaboration between teachers and our two student councils, we are excited about the opportunities this relationship will create for both communities.
Education is enriched when we learn alongside others. By sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, students and teachers alike are encouraged to look beyond the familiar, embrace new challenges, and develop a deeper understanding of the communities around them. As our students explore new environments and friendships, they discover different ways of thinking and are inspired to become more engaged, reflective, and responsible members of society.
There is an old saying that sharing is caring, and while that is certainly true, sharing is also a powerful way to learn. As we walk in someone else’s shoes we have the opportunity to see different perspectives and see familiar things in unfamiliar ways. It is through experiences like these that empathy grows, understanding deepens, and learning becomes richer for everyone involved. We look forward to seeing this partnership grow over the coming year and to the many friendships, experiences, and opportunities it will bring for everyone involved.
We are delighted to begin the new school year by celebrating the outstanding achievements of two of our students over the holiday break.
Congratulations to Thomson (Year 6), who was awarded the Bronze Medal in the PT Mentari Science Competition at the national level, and to Keyaan (Year 7), who proudly represented Indonesia at the Asia Science Mathematics Competition (ASMC) in Kuala Lumpur on 11th July, where he earned an outstanding Gold Medal.
These achievements are the result of curiosity, perseverance, and many hours of hard work. They also reflect the importance of embracing challenge and striving for excellence beyond the classroom. At Sekolah Nusa Alam, we believe that learning extends well beyond the school gates, and it is always a pleasure to see our students applying their knowledge and skills in wider competitions on both the national and international stage.

One of the quieter but no less exciting moments of the week has been the appearance of the very first fruit on the vines of our relocated plants in the front garden. After months of waiting, these plants have finally begun to bear fruit – a small but meaningful milestone in our growing sustainability programme.
For our students, this is an opportunity to see, first-hand, the relationship between care, patience, and reward. Nature rarely works to our timetable, but when we invest time and effort into looking after the environment, it has a remarkable way of giving back. These first fruits are a tangible reminder that sustainability is built through many small actions, each contributing to something much greater over time.
As our garden continues to grow, so too will the opportunities for students to learn through observation, inquiry, and hands-on experience. Together with our planned hydroponics system and other environmental initiatives, these living spaces are becoming outdoor classrooms where students can explore the natural world, discover how ecosystems work, and develop a lasting appreciation for the responsibility we all share in caring for our environment.
For now, however, we will simply enjoy this small harvest – the first fruits of our endeavours, and, we hope, the beginning of many more to come.
We are delighted to welcome Pak Helmi to the Sekolah Nusa Alam teaching staff and community this year. Pak Helmi joins our Performing Arts team and will be teaching Music alongside Ibu Adel, bringing both experience and enthusiasm to this important area of our curriculum.
While our music programme continues to develop students’ appreciation of music through performance, listening, and creativity, Pak Helmi’s particular focus will be on building students’ practical instrumental skills. Through regular practice and guided instruction, students will have the opportunity to develop greater confidence, technical ability, and musicianship across a range of instruments.
Music plays an important role in a well-rounded education. It nurtures creativity, discipline, perseverance, and collaboration while providing students with another powerful means of self-expression. We are excited about the opportunities that Pak Helmi’s expertise will bring to our students and look forward to seeing our music programme continue to flourish.

Next week, we will celebrate one of the most important events on our school calendar – Kindness Week. Beginning with a whole-school assembly, the week will set the tone not only for the days ahead, but for the year itself, reminding us that the way we treat one another shapes the kind of community we become.
Throughout the week, students from every year level will take part in a range of age-appropriate activities designed to encourage empathy, compassion, generosity, and respect. While kindness is often seen as something simple, it is also something that requires courage. It asks us to notice those around us, to listen carefully, to include others, and to act with thoughtfulness, even when no one is watching.
Kindness Week also reflects this year’s theme, Explore. Discover. Inspire. We hope our students will explore what kindness looks like in everyday life, discover the positive difference even the smallest act can make, and inspire others to do the same. In doing so, they bring our Cambridge learner attributes to life – becoming responsible in their actions, engaged with those around them, reflective about the impact they have on others, and confident enough to lead through example.
Although the activities last for just one week, the message extends far beyond it. Our aim is to nurture a culture in which kindness is not reserved for special occasions, but becomes part of the everyday life of our school, enriching our relationships and strengthening our community throughout the year.
